Last week, my brother came to visit Pittsburgh for the first time. The pressure was on to show him a good time, so we grabbed tickets to a Pens game, made reservations at a great restaurant, and mapped out which breweries we wanted to hit while he was in town. We decided to take him to some our favorite spots on the other side of the Allegheny River in Millvale and Sharpsburg, and it was just our luck that there was a somewhat new tap room for us to try while we were there.
Hitchhiker Brewing Co. originally opened in the heart of Mt. Lebanon in 2014. Earlier this summer they expanded, opening a second location in Sharpsburg. Their new digs, once inhabited by Fort Pitt Brewing Co., is now home to all of the Hitchhiker brewing operations as well as a new spacious, industrial tap room.
Both old and new locations now offer a number of food items to go along with the beer selection.
Take a glance at the chalkboard menu above your head, then sidle up to the steel topped bar to place your order. The bar tenders will pour your pint from the wooden handled taps along the cement wall behind them.
If you need help selecting, our favorites were the Surge – an American IPA with honey, lemon, and lime creating a perfect blend of hops and citrus, smoothed out with a bit of honey; the Woke – whose coffee and maple syrup notes make for a wonderful breakfast stout; and the Petal & Brine – a beautifully light hibiscus saison. Ask the bar tenders for their suggestions as well! They are all very knowledgable of the beers they have on tap.
Hitchhiker does have a set of regular beers, as well as a fairly extensive list of rotating options. So, grab a few friends – there is plenty of space for groups! – and head over to Sharpsburg for a drink and let me know which of their beers is your favorite!
